How can a Therapy Assessment Help with Disability or Injury Claims?
Disability Claims
In order to qualify for certain disability benefits, such as social security disability, an individual must experience a long-term debilitating condition that is expected to last for at least 12 months and that disability must impact that person’s ability to work. However, simply meeting the outlines requirements of a certain disability is not enough for an applicant to receive those disability benefits, especially when the government is involved (like with the Department of Veterans Affairs or Social Security).
The Importance of Medical & Clinical Evidence
When applying for social security, VA benefits, or some other disability benefit, the adjudicator reviewing an application wants to see not only medical evidence of a diagnosis or ability, but they also want to review documentation of treatment history, outcomes of such treatments, and current functional status or abilities. If the disability is physical in nature (musculoskeletal; involving joints or muscles), the adjudicator may want to review records of physical and/or occupational therapy treatments and progress notes/evaluations from those clinicians.
It is important to have detailed and accurate records of treatment regarding any treatment received in the past, and any treatment currently being received. It also helps to include clinical reports that document current functional abilities and status.
Some agencies, like Social Security Administration, request a medical source statement explaining what functional abilities remain despite the disability or impairments. These need to come from a licensed medical professional. While it is best to get this statement from the your medical doctor, documentation from physical and occupational therapy (or other medical professionals) that are not involved in your case or treatment help and can be considered by those agencies.
VA Disability Claims
Navigating the VA Disability claim environment can be daunting. In addition, sometimes a medical diagnosis or evaluation isn’t enough for a successful claim. The C&P Exam may be missing key information, such as objective measurement and movement screenings or assessments. This can lead to a claim denial. We have completed multiple disability assessments for veterans over the years to provide objective medical evidence to support VA disability claims. We have developed our movement screen process & formatting with a doctor who helps veterans with disability claims and appeals to make sure that the assessment and the report resulting form the assessment meet all the necessary requirements and data needed to properly support a VA Disability Claim.
