Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well

Forever Strong: A New, Science-Based Strategy for Aging Well, by Dr. Gabrielle Lyon covers an important topic for those of us who are aging and want to live as healthy as possible for as long as possible. It covers the importance of muscle strength and protein intake, backed by research and medical case studies. It does read a bid "salesy" in some sections, but the core information is good stuff.

Runner's World Train Smart, Run Forever: How to Become a Fit and Healthy Lifelong Runner by Following The Innovative 7-Hour Workout Week

Runner's World Train Smart, Run Forever: How to Become a Fit and Healthy Lifelong Runner by Following The Innovative 7-Hour Workout Week, by Bill Pierce and Scott Murr got me (Rafi) through training for my first Half Marathon. The book covers everything from how much to train/run, running form & posture, and even includes a detailed workout program for runners who want to be lifelong runners.

Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen

Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen, by Christopher McDougall is an inspiring read about a tribe called the Tarahumara Indians in Mexico's Copper Canyons and how they've developed the ability to run incredibly long distances, with minimal footwear. It's a great story, and also highlights how we're all "born to run".

Born to Run 2: The Ultimate Training Guide

Born to Run 2: The Ultimate Training Guide, Christopher McDougall & Eric Orton is a follow-up to Chritopher's first book Born to Run. Whether you're ramping up for a race or recuperating from an injury, Born to Run 2 is a holistic program for runners of every stripe that centers on seven key themes: food, fitness, form, footwear, focus, fun, and family.

Spark by J. Ratey

Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, by J. Ratey, MD is a great read. Surgery, The Ultimate Placebo: A Surgeon Cuts through the Evidence

Surgery, The Ultimate Placebo: A Surgeon Cuts through the Evidence, by Ian Harris, an orthopedic surgeon covers the evidence around surgery. He answers the question: Does surgery really help? And the surprising answer for many operations is, "No, it doesn't". As Ian mentioned on a podcast interview he did with Rafi, for many complaints and conditions, the benefits from surgery are lower, and the risks higher, than you or your surgeon think.

Running & Walking Shoe Options

Xero Shoes Running

Xero Shoes Men's HFS II Barefoot Running Shoes. Rafi loves his pairs of Xero shoes. These are great for running.

Merrell Running

Merrell Men's Vapor Glove 5 Sneaker. Rafi has gone through a couple pairs of Vapor Gloves. They're really comfortable, like you're wearing a sock with a sole. The only potential downside is that they tend to wear out quickly if you put a lot of road miles on them.

ALTRA Men's Torin 7 Road Running Shoe

ALTRA Men's Torin 7 Road Running Shoe. For those that want more support than a barefoot shoe provides, Altra provides a good option. They have a wide toe box, which means your toes don't get squished. These have an average amount of "stack height" (cushion), at 28mm. But the nice thing about these is they provide a "zero drop" sole, which means that there's no heel rise. This means it doesn't alter your natural gait or running pattern.

Whitin Running

WHITIN Men's Barefoot Running Shoes | Minimalist Cross-Trainer | Zero Drop Sole. For those that want to try barefoot or minimalist shoes without the high price tag, WHITIN by Amazon is a great option. They have a wide toe box, which means your toes don't get squished &  a "zero drop" sole, which means that there's no heel rise. This means it doesn't alter your natural gait or running pattern.

Vivobarefoot Running

Vivobarefoot Primus Lite Knit Mens Barefoot Shoes | Build Strength, Balance & Mobility | Lightweight for Training & Running | Wide Fit Grounding Shoes | Flexible Knit. Now, these shoes run a little high on the price side, but they are by far some of the most comfortable and durable barefoot/minimalist shoes we've ever tried.
