Aquatic Therapy at Proactive Rehabilitation & Wellness

Helping you overcome pain on land and in the water…

Proactive Rehabilitation & Wellness offers Aquatic Therapy programs through our partners at the Wilson Family Y.

As an alternative to, or in addition with land-based physical therapy programs, aquatic therapy offers many benefits. It is effective at improving circulation, joint mobility, strength, core muscle stability, balance, coordination and endurance. Check out an article we wrote on 5 Things to Know About Aquatic Therapy.

Why Choose Aquatic Therapy?

As an alternative to, or in addition with land-based physical therapy programs, aquatic physical therapy offers many benefits.

The physical properties of water (buoyancy, laminar flow, hydrostatic pressure, and heat) allows people recovering from injuries, illness or surgeries to participate in active rehabilitation sooner than would be possible on land. During the initial phase of functional restoration, water supports the body and reduces stress to the joints allowing muscles to be strengthened and toned.

This type of therapy is effective at improving circulation, joint mobility, strength, core muscle stability, balance, coordination and endurance.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Where is your pool?

We provide all pool therapy at the Adapted Pool at the Wilson Family Y, located on Wheeler Road.  Address and driving directions are on the back of this flyer.

Do I have to join the Y to do pool therapy there?

No.  You will be seen as a therapy patient, and ProActive will bill your insurance for the therapy you receive. You will only be responsible for the expenses you would have incurred if you were seen in our clinic (e.g. co-pays or co-insurance.)

Do I have to know how to swim?

No. The pool is 3.5 to 7+ feet deep, and many exercises are done standing up. Both your therapist and a lifeguard will be immediately available to you during your entire session.

What should I bring to the pool?

Most people wear their pool clothes under their street clothes.  Bring your own big, fluffy towels and toiletries (if you plan on showering afterward.)   You can wear pool shoes but they are not required.  All the pool equipment you need is provided by the Y.

Is the pool accessible?

Yes. Shallow steps, a ramp and a lift are all available.  It is a salt water pool, requiring fewer chemicals, and is usually heated to 90 degrees F.

Where do I go to sign in?

The accessible pool is at the entrance on the west side of the building.  There is a huge mosaic mural of a gymnast on the side of the building at this entrance.  Once inside, tell the desk attendant you are there for therapy, and he/she will direct you to the pool area.
