Aging Well: A Physical Therapist’s Guide to Remaining Active in Old Age
Aging Well

The expectation of frailty in older adults prepares many people for setting low expectations in physical activity as they age. Particularly in America, there is an epidemic of frailty among our aging population. For many, the idea of aging well means not falling down on the way to the bathroom.

Caution can Lead to Frailty as we Age

In the rehab world, it is common to hear people telling their older loved ones to be extremely cautious, be less active, not go as many places, to let others take care of everything, and avoid injuries at all costs. While fracture prevention and safety are critical in maintaining a high quality of life, this extreme protection of our aging loved ones leaves them without purpose and without healthy, movement-focused ways to spend their time.

A study of over 3,000 Chinese older adults made some interesting connections between age-related loss of muscle strength and muscle mass (also known as sarcopenia), and overall function. The study found that as a person lost more muscle mass and strength in aging, they had decreased cognitive function, and had increased depressive symptoms. What an empowering connection it is to realize the role of staying strong and fit in aging with a clear head and mind.

How to Age Well

Whenever possible, meaningful aging should include maintaining deep social connections, maintaining a sense of purpose, and maintaining endurance and strength. Social connections are critical as well age and should include relationships with friends and family, and being a part of groups that interest someone.

Keeping a strong sense of purpose can be maintained through things like keeping a garden, volunteering, doing as many of your own chores as possible, and getting out of the house for things that interest you. And maintaining strength and endurance can be done through challenging home exercises that give a muscle burn or make you sweat, group fitness classes, participation in sports, and participating in personal training or physical therapy.

Don’t sell yourself short, and make sure you are evaluating these different aspects of your life to assess whether there is room for improvement in a certain area. And if you’re unsure of how to begin exercising at a higher level, schedule an appt today with one of our PTs!
