Electrolytes

How important are electrolytes?

Poor sleep quality? Cramping muscles? Aching joints? Brain fog? Are electrolytes to blame?

These are widespread issues that many people complain of. One thing they have in common? They are all symptoms of electrolyte imbalance. As people age, electrolyte imbalances become more widespread because of things such as medication interactions, changes in kidney function and reduced thirst.

Electrolyte imbalance sounds innocuous but it can be the cause for serious hospitalizations and life threatening morbidities. If you have a range of mild but bothersome symptoms, it can be hard to get a proper diagnosis for electrolytes that are slightly out of whack. Remember, common blood tests from the doctor will show normative ranges for us, but not necessarily optimal ranges. Looking at optimal values gives you a more sensitive assessment of what may be off in your body and can set you up more proactively for physical activity and reduction in pain and dysfunction.

Check out the following symptoms of different electrolyte issues:

Low magnesium

If you are experiencing a shortfall in this electrolyte, you likely experience one, or more, of these symptoms:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Weakness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Muscle pain

Low potassium

Potassium plays a role in muscle contraction, nerve conduction, heart function, and even blood pressure. If you find yourself with decreased potassium levels, you may experience one or more of the following:

  • Constipation
  • Muscle weakness
  • Palpitations
  • Low blood pressure

Low Vitamin D

Ok, Vitamin D is not an electrolyte, but many people have symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency that are similar to the other symptoms noted.

Sometimes your symptoms are vague and require you to have a sharp eye toward optimal values in your blood work. Do your homework, be your own advocate, and check out some great food sources of electrolytes below:

  • Coconut water
  • Bananas
  • Avocadoes
  • Leafy greens
  • Nuts
  • Whole grains
  • Electrolytes Supplements (we like LMNT, but there are plenty of options out there)
